What Every TEKHUB Graduate Must Build Before Their First Job Application

Your certificate is a starting line, not a finish line. Here are the exact portfolio pieces that make hiring managers in Lagos and Abuja actually call you back, and why generic CRUD projects no longer cut it in 2026.

01The Certificate Is Not the Finish Line

A TEKHUB certificate tells an employer you completed a structured program. It does not, on its own, tell them you can do the job. Hiring managers in Lagos and Abuja see hundreds of applications from bootcamp graduates every month, all holding a similar certificate. The certificate gets you past the first filter. Your portfolio is what actually gets you the interview.

02Why Generic CRUD Projects Fail You

A to-do list app. A basic blog with login. An e-commerce clone with the same product images every tutorial uses. These projects prove you can follow a tutorial. They do not prove you can think. A hiring manager scanning 40 portfolios in an afternoon has seen the exact same to-do app dozens of times, and it tells them nothing about how you handle a problem nobody has already solved for you on YouTube.

What actually gets attention is evidence of a real decision: a tradeoff you made and can explain, a bug you hit and had to actually debug, a feature you scoped down because of a real constraint. That's the difference between "I followed a course" and "I can build things."

03The Checklist

Five things, realistically achievable before your first job application:

One live, deployed projectNot just code on GitHub. A real URL a recruiter can click and actually use, hosted somewhere real.
One project solving a real local problemSomething rooted in an actual Nigerian context: a market inventory tool, a local transport tracker, a school fee reminder system. Specificity beats generic every time.
A clean README on every repoWhat it does, why you built it, how to run it, what you'd improve with more time. This is often the first thing a technical reviewer actually reads.
One written case studyA short writeup on your single best project: the problem, the decisions, the tradeoffs, what broke and how you fixed it. This is what separates you from everyone with the same certificate.
Evidence you can work with othersA group project, a code review you gave or received, a git history with more than one contributor. Employers hire teammates, not just coders.

04Where to Actually Show This

A GitHub profile with pinned repositories is the baseline. Beyond that: a LinkedIn profile that actually describes what you built, not just "completed TEKHUB Academy."
