How MTN/Airtel know where you are.
You never opened Maps. You never turned on GPS. Yet your network already knows which street you're standing on. We opened the file on cell tower triangulation, and on everything your apps see once you do open them.

◆ THE NETWORK ALREADY KNOWS
Your phone is always checking in.
No app. No GPS toggle. As long as your phone is on and has signal, it is constantly talking to the nearest masts, and MTN, Airtel, Glo and 9mobile are listening.

Cell ID positioning
Every mast has a unique ID. The moment your SIM connects, the network knows which tower you're nearest to, accurate to a few hundred metres to a few kilometres.

Triangulation (multilateration)
Where two or three towers can hear your phone, the network compares signal strength and timing from each to narrow your position down to a tighter radius.

Timing Advance (TA)
Your phone measures how long a signal takes to reach the mast and back. That delay tells the network roughly how far you are from the tower, like sonar.

◆ PRECISION
How close is close enough?
Triangulation isn't pinpoint GPS, but it's far more precise than people assume, and it gets sharper the busier your environment is.

Dense cities: Lagos, Onitsha, Awka metro
More masts packed closer together means more overlapping signals, so triangulation can narrow you down to 100–500 metres.

Rural / sparse coverage
Fewer towers spread further apart means your fix can be vague, anywhere from 1–10 kilometres wide.

Handover trail
As you move, your phone hands off between masts. That handover sequence creates a breadcrumb trail of your journey, stored in network logs.
The key point: this isn't your phone "sharing" location with an app. It's the basic plumbing of how cellular networks route your calls and data, your operator needs to know roughly where you are just to connect you.

◆ WHAT APPS CAN SEE
Apps go far beyond the network.
Network triangulation is rough. Apps that you grant "Location" permission to get something much sharper, and most ask for more than they need.
GPS / GNSS
Satellite-based, accurate to 3–10 metres outdoors. Active only while the app is using it.
PRECISE
Wi-Fi positioning
Your phone scans nearby Wi-Fi router IDs and matches them against a mapped database, accurate even indoors with GPS off.
PRECISE
Bluetooth beacons
Malls, banks, and event venues use Bluetooth beacons that apps can detect to know exactly which aisle or floor you're on.
CONTEXTUAL
IP address
Even without any permission granted, your IP address roughly reveals your city or ISP region to any app or website you use.

In Nigeria: telcos retain call/location metadata as required by NCC regulation, and can release it to law enforcement under a valid court order or lawful intercept request, separate entirely from what advertising SDKs inside your apps collect.

◆ PROTECT YOURSELF
What you can do about it.
You can't switch off network triangulation, that's baked into how cellular service works. But you control what apps add on top of it.
Set app location access to "While Using" instead of "Always" wherever your phone allows it.
Open Settings > Privacy > Location and revoke access for any app that has no real reason to need it.
Turn off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth scanning when not connecting to anything; both can be used to fix your position without GPS.
Remember that turning off GPS does not stop your network operator from knowing your approximate cell-tower location.
