TEK EXPLAINED // OPEN CASEFILE NO. 0512-BV
◆ CASE FILE: BVN SCAM
"Your BVN is suspended."
A text lands. Three lines, one deadline, one link. No bank sends this. We opened the file on how this message is built, why it works on smart people, and where the money actually goes.

◆ THE MESSAGE
Every line is engineered.
The scam isn't random panic-text. It's a script, refined over thousands of sends, where every word is doing a specific job on your brain.
FLAGGED
Original message, annotated
"Dear Customer, your BVN has been SUSPENDED due to incomplete NIN linkage. Verify within 24hrs to avoid account freeze: bvn-verify-ng.com"
A-1
Spoofed sender ID
SMS sender names like "CBN-ALERT" or your bank's name can be set by anyone through bulk SMS gateways. It isn't proof the message came from them.
A-2
A problem you can't verify fast
Almost nobody knows what a normal BVN status looks like, so the claim feels plausible enough not to question immediately.
A-3
A countdown
"Within 24hrs" exists to switch off slow thinking. Urgency is the single most reliable trick in every scam script.

◆ THE FAKE PORTAL
The link opens a copy, not a bank.
The page that loads is a near-identical clone of a bank or NIBSS verification screen, built only to collect what you type into it.

VERIFY & RESTORE ACCOUNT
⚠ A real BVN check never asks for your card PIN or a one-time password. Those exist to move money, not to confirm identity.
B-1
Look-alike domain
"bvn-verify-ng.com" is built to look official but is registered privately, by the scammer, often hours before the SMS blast.
B-2
Branding, stolen
Logos and color schemes are copied directly from real bank or CBN/NIBSS pages to pass a glance-test.
B-3
Fields that don't belong
No legitimate verification flow needs your card PIN, full card number, or OTP in the same form — that combination only exists to drain an account.

◆ THE PIPELINE
From tap to empty account.
Once a card number, PIN, or OTP is submitted, the theft is mostly automated. The window between submission and a drained account is often minutes.

Why the OTP matters most: banks and card networks treat a correctly entered OTP as your own authorization. Once it's handed over, a transfer or withdrawal looks legitimate from the inside — making it far harder to reverse.

◆ PROTECT YOURSELF
What you can do about it.
You can't verify a BVN status from a text message. But these checks catch the scam before it ever reaches your card details.
BVN cannot be "suspended." There is no such status. NIBSS and your bank do not send links demanding verification by SMS.
Never enter your card number, PIN, or OTP on any page reached through a text message link — ever, for any reason.
If unsure, close the message and contact your bank directly through the number on your card or its official app.
Report and block the number, and forward suspicious bank SMS to your bank's official fraud line.
