A data analyst pulls the relevant data, cleans it, looks for the real pattern, and explains what it means to people who don't work with spreadsheets all day. Most of the job is communication as much as it is technical work.

02Analyst vs Scientist vs Engineer

These three roles get used interchangeably online and shouldn't be. A data analyst answers specific business questions from existing data. A data scientist builds predictive models and often needs deeper statistics and machine learning. A data engineer builds and maintains the pipelines that move and store the data in the first place, the plumbing everyone else depends on. Analyst is the most common entry point of the three, and the fastest realistic path into working with data professionally.

Start with SQL and spreadsheets, since they cover the majority of real entry-level analyst work on their own. Add Python and visualization once those are solid. Then build two or three real projects using public Nigerian or African datasets, not another generic Titanic-dataset tutorial, and write up what you found and why it matters. That combination, fundamentals plus a portfolio that shows real thinking, is what actually gets a first analyst role.

05Where the Jobs Actually Are

Banks, fintechs, telcos, and e-commerce companies in Nigeria all run real data teams, because all four industries generate enormous volumes of transaction and customer data that someone has to make sense of. Increasingly, product and marketing teams inside smaller startups hire their first data hire as an analyst too, before they're large enough to need a dedicated scientist or engineer.
